President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has described as “excellent news,” American microblogging and social networking service, Twitter’s choice of Ghana as the destination for its African headquarters.
He added that his government and Ghanaians welcome this announcement.
Twitter, which is one of the world’s leading social media companies, said it chose Ghana because of the country’s record “as a champion for democracy and a supporter of free speech, online freedom and the open internet of which Twitter is also an advocate”.
The statement from Twitter announcing its commencement of operations in Ghana also outlined the recent appointment of Ghana to host the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area as one of the reasons for the big tech company’s decision to open its Africa operations headquarters in Ghana.
President Nana Akufo-Addo in a tweet also added that the partnership between Twitter and Ghana is critical for the development of Ghana’s technology sector.
“The choice of Ghana as HQ for Twitter’s Africa operations is excellent news. Government and Ghanaians welcome very much this announcement and the confidence reposed in our country.”
“As I indicated to Jack Dorsey [Twitter CEO] in our virtual meeting of 7th April 2021, this is the start of a beautiful partnership between Twitter and Ghana, which is critical for the development of Ghana’s hugely important tech sector,” he added.
The technology company announced that it is looking for specialists to join its many teams including product, design, engineering, marketing and communications.
