If there is anything that the people in the Tongu areas in the Volta region could be thankful of,is the extent of attention that the areas have drawn following the visit by Mr.Alan Kyerematen, the leader of the Movement for Change and 2024 Independent Presidential Aspirant.
Last Saturday, the former Trades and Industry minister spent the entire day touring the affected areas of Mepe,Battor,Sogakope,Ada etc to ascertain for himself, the level of devastation as a result of the spillage. The visit was used by the man tipped by many to cause political tsunami in the country in 2024 to meet community leaders of these areas who had frank discussions with him on their views as to what had happened.
The visit was widely covered and this drew a sharp focus to the plight of the people.Sensing danger, the President Nana Akuffo Addo, visited after Mr.Kyerematen had left. The President’s visit was overshadowed by a comment he made to the extent that though the people did not vote for him,he was ready to help,a comment that has received a lot of backlash from many Ghanaians who felt the President was insensitive.
The Vice President who was in the country and was busily campaigning to be the flagbearer whiles the people were suffering in a turn of events also decided to visit the area after the President.
The residents in these areas were surprised that it had to take the Vice President that long time to visit though he was in the country and could have stand in the stead of the President who was out of the country.
The residents who spoke on conditions of anonymity said they viewed the visit by the Vice President as being a panic reaction to the visit by Mr.Alan Kyerematen and his gradual take over of the Volta region and that he showed more concern about their plight than anyone.
