In the beginning; Kuffour contested with Adu Boahen in 1996 with others and emerged first. Then went further to contest in the general elections and lost to JJ Rawlings.

In 1998; Kuffour again contested with Akufo Addo and won and went ahead to contest in the general elections in 2000 and won too.

President Akufo Addo contested with Alan in 2007 and scored a higher mark but wasn’t allowed by the constitution to be declared winner; except for the agreement of his second contender. Alan being the next on the line gave the green light for him to be declared the winner and also the Flag bearer. This was a sacrifice he made without considering a runoff election, even though every elections of that sort has always placed the second person ahead in Ghana’s politics. But the Sacrifice of Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen gave room for the candidate Akufo Addo to be declared winner.

In the excitement of Akufo Addo to such a victory; he gave yet another assurance to Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen “in 1998 when I contested with Kuffour and lost; he came to my house and told me I will become president only when he is done. Alan, you will follow me”. These are the words of Akufo Addo in the beginning.

No matter how the contest was going to be in the 1996; nobody asked for a joint candidature of major contenders. Similarly in 1998; no one again asked for such a joint candidature, not in 2007 and henceforth. Why today?

The tradition must continue. As it was in the beginning; so shall Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen also lead now, even to those who may also come after him.
